How to make background of desktop icon text transparent?

For Windows XP/Vista/Win7 users, this is a tip to make the background of desktop icon text becomes transparent.

  • Right click My Computer, and select Properties menu item
  • Choose the Advanced tab
  • Click Settings in the Performance section
  • Turn off the "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" option in the bottom list, and click Ok

If it doesn't work on Windowx XP, maybe you enable the Active Desktop. You can according to the followings to disable the Active Desktop:

  • Right click on empty area on Desktop
  • Select Properties menu item
  • Choose Desktop tab, and click "Customize Desktop..." button on bottom
  • Choose Web tab, clear all check mark under the "Web pages" list and click Ok


How to change desktop icon text color

Microsoft doesn't provide the option that changing the desktop icon text color, to do that, we need to use other tools, like Desktop Icon Toy.

An alternative way is changing the background of desktop icon text, fisrtly we need to turn off the drop shadows:

  • Right click My Computer, and select Properties menu item
  • Choose the Advanced tab
  • Click Settings in the Performance section
  • Turn off the "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" option in the bottom list, and click Ok

Then change the background according to the followings:

  • Right click on empty area on Desktop
  • Select Properties menu item
  • Choose Desktop tab
  • Change the Color from lower right corner
